Ukrenergo, Market Operator and UEEX Sign Memorandums for EU Electricity Market Coupling Preparation
Last editorial update:
On 7 September NPC Ukrenergo, JSC Market Operator and the Ukrainian Energy Exchange signed memorandums of cooperation to coordinate technical and organisational work required for electricity market coupling between Ukraine and the EU (day-ahead and intraday segments). The documents set out joint preparation steps without exclusivity clauses; Ukrenergo indicated readiness to conclude analogous agreements with other future NEMOs. This follows the earlier adoption of the Market Coupling Law and is a concrete operational milestone toward full integration.
Why it matters
Market coupling is the single most important structural reform for renewable and BESS project economics in Ukraine: it expands liquidity, improves price discovery, enables more efficient cross-border trade and reduces the isolated-market risk premium. For originators of 5–100 MW solar, wind and hybrid assets in western and central regions this advances bankable offtake structures and long-term export optionality once secondary legislation and NEMO designation are completed.
