US DFC Approves Landmark Loan for DTEK 200 MW / 400 MWh BESS Portfolio

Last editorial update:

Storage / BESSInvestment / FinancingInternational Support

The US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) approved an €85 million (up to $185 million) loan to DTEK for its already-operational 200 MW / 400 MWh battery energy storage portfolio across six sites in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions (central Ukraine). The systems, using Fluence technology, entered commercial operation in 2025 and provide rapid frequency response. The financing primarily refinances interim debt, freeing equity for further BESS and generation projects. It is DFC’s largest energy-sector loan to Ukraine since 2022.

Why it matters

Direct positive signal for private BESS investment risk appetite and bankability in Ukraine. Frees DTEK capital for additional 5–100 MW hybrid/storage projects; validates US technology and DFI structuring. Relevant for origination of similar co-located or standalone storage assets in central and western regions ahead of winter and further auctions.
